A small selection of the most interesting items which have appeared in Coffee House... and indeed appeared in several of the papers we write for.  We really hope you find them both interesting and useful.

(While this site is still being rebuilt, we are adding features as and when we get the chance.  We'll get the full collection on eventually.  Sorry if it's a mess until then.)

World champions - but what now?

In our latest printed magazine,  we consider the implications of the British win in the world barista championships.   Don't miss it - this could shake up the entire British coffee-bar industry... but will it? The full debate is now on this site - click here

Black Gold - the film about the plight of Ethiopian farmers is now beginning to be seen around the country. But is this a good film? An accurate film? A great film?   Various members of the trade give their opinions.

May 2007:

Workplace Coffee Bars:  and why architects shouldn't be let loose near them!  From On Office magazine, the style/design magazine for workplace architects and designers.  We weren't able to get a good-quality PDF of the printer version, so this is straight text.

Consistency in the Workplace series, by La Spaziale -

Steve Penk of La Spaziale wanted to put across a collection of best-practice pointers for those working with espresso. He divided it into a series of short and to-the-point masterclasses.

May 2005, water temperature.

July 2005, the grind

Oct 2005, jugs

Dec 2005, the truth about tamping

Jan 2006, 'grind on demand'

April 2006, 'the espresso taste challenge'

May 2006, 'the barista'.

Other workplace issues:

The following set of features were written as background notes to help me with some features I was doing. They were all so darned good, written with such knowledge, flair, humour and opinion, that we thought they really should be enjoyed in their own right, so here they are:

FILTER COFFEE - the exiled king

by Paul Stack, Marco.

BUILDING A COFFEE MENU - CAFETIERE COFFEES

by Jeremy Torz and Dominic Lowdell, Union Coffee Roasters

SUPER-AUTOMATIC MACHINES

by Agostino Luggeri  of Mulmar

A DISCUSSION OF BEAN-TO-CUP SYSTEMS

by Ian Balmforth of Bolling Coffee

We have always said that we find the stories that no other magazine does. Try this one - was the apple in the Garden of Eden really... a coffee plant?

COFFEE AND THE ASCENT OF MAN

This feature appeared in the Jan/Feb 2006 issue of Coffee House. It was our favourite feature - but a

screw-up meant that the last few paragraphs got missed out from the printed version, so we're re-printing it in full.

CLEANING UP - a talk with John Nelson, an expert on dishwashers and glasswashers.

MUSEUM MAN - Edward Bramah's Tea and Coffee Museum:
